Most cameras ask what a scene looks like. AliceSense asks what it feels like.

Rather than relying solely on a lens, it captures a moment through the device's wider sensory state: ambient sound, kinetic motion, light, time, weather, framing, and traces of visual structure. These signals act as a multidimensional exposure, which is then developed into an image through generative AI. What emerges is not a conventional photograph, but a sensory translation of a specific space in time.

Capturing Atmosphere

AliceSense does not measure emotion; it measures presence. It records the concrete conditions of a space: the acoustic energy of the room, the physical instability of the device, the time of day, the weather, the ambient light, and the loose structural framing of the scene. These signals shape how a place is experienced. AliceSense uses them to build images grounded in the sensed character of a moment rather than the literal appearance of a scene.

The Ritual of the Sensor Card

Pressing the shutter does not yield an instant picture; it creates an undeveloped Sensor Card. This data-rich memory can be developed using distinct visual instruments. The same captured moment can therefore be interpreted through different aesthetic logics rather than a single fixed truth.

A card may also receive one additional exposure before development. This allows time, interference, repetition, and physical instability to fold into the final image. AliceSense is less about taking a picture than about composing a memory through accumulation, atmosphere, and intentional delay.

Development

AliceSense uses GenAI as a darkroom rather than a generator of arbitrary fantasy. The aim is to create an image faithful to the conditions the device actually recorded. Each development instrument offers a distinct way for a latent sensory exposure to materialize:

  • Analog: anchors the moment in photographic reality, using the room's energy to dictate film grain, halation, and motion blur.
  • Shui-mo: translates acoustic and kinetic intensity into expressive, monochromatic brushwork, using heavy ink splashes or expansive negative space.
  • Diagram: renders the moment as a raw, tactile sensory diagram, mapping data through architectural construction lines and precise drafting marks.
  • Infrared: adopts a machine's perspective, replacing natural colors with intense, data-driven gradients to visualize the invisible telemetry of the space.

A Parallel Instrument

AliceSense is not trying to replace photography. It is a speculative device for capturing conditions, tensions, and peripheral experiences. Optical image data remains present, but only as a structural scaffold. The project asks what an image becomes when it is authored not merely by light entering a lens, but by the physical body of the device, the pulse of the environment, and the weight of an invisible moment.
